WeWork's IPO collapses
In September 2019 WeWork's parent company published its IPO prospectus, revealing large losses and unusual governance arrangements. Investors questioned the valuation, which had reached $47 billion in a private round. Its co-founder stepped down as CEO on 24 September, and on 30 September the flotation was postponed.
Together with Uber's disappointing debut in May, it marked a turn in how public investors treated loss-making, high-valuation technology listings.
The takeaway
Private-market valuations are set by a few investors; public markets can reprice them abruptly.
