The US–China tariff war begins
On 6 July 2018 the US began collecting 25% tariffs on about $34 billion of Chinese goods, and China immediately imposed tariffs of its own. Further rounds followed through 2018 and 2019, at times covering hundreds of billions of dollars of trade.
Markets swung on each escalation and each truce, and global manufacturing and supply chains adjusted. The dispute remained a market driver for years.
The takeaway
Policy-driven risks resolve by negotiation as much as by economics, which makes them hard to forecast.
